Lake Superior Lighthouses




Duluth Harbor Lights (North Breakwater (Pier) Light, South Inner Breakwater Light, South Outer Breakwater Light and Minnesota Point Lighthouse ruins)


Built:  1910, 1901, 1901 and 1858, respectively

Viewing:  From I-35 in Duluth, take exit 256-B (Lake Ave. and 5th Ave. West) to Lake Ave.  Turn east on Lake Ave. and go about 0.1 miles to the traffic signal at the bottom of the hill.  Stay in the left lane and continue straight ahead on Canal Park Dr. about 0.4 miles to the parking area on the canal.  As you walk to the canal, look for the North Breakwater Light and the South Breakwater Outer Light to the left and the South Breakwater Inner Light to the right across the canal.  To see the Minnesota Point Lighthouse ruins, return to Lake Ave. and go approximately 5 miles to the road's end at the airport.  (Lake Ave. changes to Minnesota Ave.)  Park in marked areas on the roadside just before the airport.  The trail to the light begins behind the first airport building and is marked by a gate erected to keep cars off the road.  From the gate, follow the trail until you are about 2 blocks past the end of the runway.  At this point the road turns left to a pumping station, `1    the route to the light continues straight ahead on a two-track.  The two-track leads .25 miles to a steel tower.  Pass to the left of the tower and, following one of the trails long the Lake Superior shore, walk another .25 miles to the light, in a large, open area in the middle of a sand bar.
