Lake Michigan Lighthouses

Michigan City Lighthouse Museum and East Pierhead Light

Built:  1837 and 1904, respectively

Viewing:   From I-94 at Michigan City, exist on US-421 (also called Franklin St.) and go north approximately 3.8 miles to 9th St. (that is one-way).  Turn right on 9th St. and go 1 block to Pine St. (also one-way).  Turn left on Pine and go about .05 miles to Franklin St.  Follow Franklin St. about 0.3 miles into Washington Park.  As you cross the bridge, look for the lighthouse to the left on Lake Shore Dr.  You cannot turn left on Lake Shore, but must bear right about a block and, staying in the left lane, make a U-turn at the turn around and then go west on Lake Shore Dr. 1 block past Franklin St.  For the East Pierhead Light, return to Lakeshore and go about 0.1 miles to the road that goes to the beach and zoo parking area.  Drive to the west end of the parking area for the shortest walk to the pierhead light.  You can also make a much longer walk from the Old Michigan City Lighthouse Museum area.
